Buoyant is Wave’s front-end framework to keep you afloat. It’s the HTML and CSS implementation of components.
Lighthouse is the React implementation of those front-end components.
We like nautical themes here 😄
Shortly after onboarding and working with the Wave design team, it became clear that their design system played a crucial role in building and delivering high-quality designs and cohesive experiences across the product ecosystem.
I take a hands-on approach to Design Systems. At Wave the Design Systems Team was in an early stage with 1-2 dedicated people. To help fill in the gaps, the Product Design Team had shared ownership of design systems. As an individual contributor on a product team, I quickly became one of the highest contributors to the Wave design system, Buoyant and Lighthouse. I contributed to the design team by involving them into the design system aspects of product delivery, sharing back results, and actively contributing to the design tooling experience.
I also actively contributed to the technical code side. This allowed me to work closer with my team mates, and help design translate to code throughout the organization, and ultimately to the user experience. Some of my code contributions included adding new icons, updating documentation, and fixing or updating components details directly such as spacing and colour.
The job of a product is to understand user problems deeply and intimately in order to create experiences that anyone can easily use. I work closely with engineering to understand how user interfaces behave at a foundational level and make them easy for designers to use.
